What to borrow from the past?
Small masses that mimic traditional Jackson Ward buildings do not fit easily into this environment. Despite this, a “traditional” variant is possible and even anticipated. It will bear simplified footprints combined with abundance of architectural details, while retaining the scale and spatial nature of the current concept. However it will require a precise stylistic “tuning” which is a time consuming process. Most importantly, such a process should involve, not further study of the architectural vernacular, but rather attempt to take some sort of a so called “participationalism” approach. This approach is aimed at revealing architectural (spatial and stylistic) preferences of the complex’s future customers, and of the community members.
